ALFA: Antiterror - Advanced War Tactics In ALFA: Antiterror - Advanced War Tactics the player takes the role of a young soldier who gets a member of ALFA, the Russian anti terror force. During the 22 missions he improves his rank until he commands 16 soldiers. The mission goals are mostly to defend a position, liberate a map or rescuing hostages. Besides the campaign there are also single scenarios.

Before every mission the player chooses his team members and their equipment. Then the mission and the first planning phase begins where he gives orders to his team, e.g. moving to a point and then attacking an enemy. In the following action phase he watches how his and his opponent's orders are performed at the same time. Because there can be a lot of parallel battlegrounds in a mission the player can re-watch an action phase as often as he wants. Unlike similar games this one doesn't use action points to limit the actions per round but a time limit: every action round lasts 20 seconds. If orders are left they get performed in the next turn. This means the player theoretically can plan the whole mission during the first phase.

For solved missions the player receives commando points which he uses to promote soldiers to the next rank. Experience points are rewarded for killed enemies which are reinvested in awards. Both ranks and awards improve some of the soldier's abilities. There is also the possibility to send a soldier to a training course to specialise him in five fields, e.g. sniping.

Every soldier has his own voice acting and personality. There are also several tactical influences the player needs to pay attention to: The soldiers can take cover in buildings and - with the right weapon - shoot through certain materials. Height differences, kind of underground and equipment weights are other factors. There are also vehicles to use in some missions. [source:mobygames]
