A Stroke of Fate: Operation Valkyrie is the first of a series of two games set in World War II, following the story of the German Resistance in 1944. You play this first game in the role of Gerhard Mayer, a member of the SS with a day job in the Gestapo. Disagreeing with some of the heavy-handed tactics of the Third Reich, you get embroiled in a plot to overthrow the Nazi regime and assassinate Adolf Hitler. There are obvious crossovers with the Tom Cruise movie "Valkyrie" although the plot is not identical.

Operation Valkyrie is a standard 3rd person point-and-click adventure game, with a realistic graphical style and a strong historical focus. An option is provided to play the game with black-and-white visuals, to further add to the historical feel. The cut-scenes comprise still pictures in a slideshow format rather than animation. There are a combination of stand-alone logic puzzles and inventory-based puzzles as seen in most recent adventure games. The game ends with a cliff hanger, to be resolved in the second chapter, entitled Operation Bunker. [source:mobygames]
