Cartoon Wars: Gunner Cartoon Wars: Gunner is a spin-off of the tower-defense-game Cartoon Wars. The player takes on the role of Captain J. who had been attacked by assassins sent by the King. The Captain survived the attack badly injured and fled deep into the mountains. After a bit of resting and healing he's seeking revenge.

To get to the king, the player has to survive the journey back to the castle. Each level represents a small part of this journey and is viewed from the side with the main character able to move in any direction of the screen a limited way. His only goal: to destroy every one of the 30 different types of enemy that come walking (or flying) into the screen. To do so he has initially only access to a bow but during the course of the game he can unlock 10 additional weapons including a mech-suit but carry only three at the same time.

Each weapon as well as the Captain J. himself can be upgraded using gold which is earned for each kill he makes. Upgrades include a higher health regeneration, a higher shot-frequency and active/passive skills. The active skills are essentially spells like a rain of fire which need mana in order to be cast. Captain J. starts every level with no mana at all and gains it slowly automatically (depending on the upgrade level) and by killing enemies. [source:mobygames]
