Close Combat: Cross of Iron is an enhanced remake of the critically acclaimed real time strategy game, Close Combat III: The Russian Front by Atomic Games. Playing as either the Germans or Russians, the game takes place during WWII on the Russian Front, where as a commander you must lead your troops through five years of brutal combat.

Like other games in the series, the AI for both your troops and the enemy is what makes the game. Order troops to attack and heavily armed tank, and they may refuse, calling you insane. Leave a team unsupported and under heavy attack, and the team may begin to panic and flee or even surrender.

While it keeps the traditional top down view of the earlier games, Close Combat: Cross of Iron has some limited RPG like elements. Troops can be upgraded and refitted with new equipment between battles and for each battle they survive they gain skills like experience and strength.

Also included in the remake are new graphics, sounds, and an all new campaign. [source:mobygames]
