Director of Football Director of Football is a typical football-management game of the "German school" in the line of titles such as Bundesliga Manager series (by the same designers) or the ANSTOSS series, where handling finances take a part as large as managing the team itself. Featuring 4 main leagues (England with 4 divisions, France and Italy with 3 and Spain with 2) along other four minor leagues with a single division (The Netherlands, Germany, Portugal and Scotland). However, only one of the four main leagues can be fully activated, removing all lower levels from the remaining leagues. The player can create his own leagues and data sets (allowing to have more recent or even fantasy squads) using the built-in editor. And as if that's not enough, the player can also choose to select any team and play with it on another championship, randomize the starting team of players as well as their attributes, positions, ages and stadium sizes, making each game unique.

Players are rated according to a "CTI" rating in a 0-999 scale. CTI sums the abilities of a player by averaging his condition, technique and intelligence values, which is further affected by the player form. Each value of the CTI corresponds to a wider range of skills: condition includes his strength, stamina and tackling abilities, intelligence his team spirit, tactical sense and overview and finally technique his average of acceleration, dribbling and shooting values. They are also rated on other special skill areas, such as crossing, goal instinct and experience. Goalkeepers, being specialized players, feature a much more simplified rating system with a single strength category (not affected by form) and seven skill areas.

Inside the game, the player is responsible for several areas, including managing the squad (setting tactics and formations and team talks), acting as the titular "Director" (insure players against injuries, hire players and set contracts, set training camps and deal with potential new players for the youth team), and acting in finances (advertising and stadium expansions). The player can earn additional revenue from dealing in the stock market (risky) or making long-term deposits, which provide a reliable return, but the money can't be withdrawn before the stipulated date.

The player advances on his career depending on two factors: his success as manager (set by a numeric score) and achievement medals, won by completing the season with certain criteria met (such as a high contract-end average, performing well in the competitions and milking advertisers).
