Drift City is a online-only racing game. It is a free-to-play title which means it can be downloaded and played free of charge and it finances itself with by selling in-game items. These items give certain advantages, e.g. a better looking paintwork or experience bonuses. The retail version includes several of these items to make up for the price.

The game is set in the near future when oil runs out. The infrastructure takes a hit from that but on four islands humanity finds a new resource: Mittron. The game takes place on these four islands which can be explored freely. By driving to certain points on the map the player starts missions, e.g. delivering goods in a time limit, chasing HUVs (automatic cars) or tailing cars. Every solved mission rewards Mittron, the currency. It can be used to upgrade the car or buy one of the previously mentioned items.

The controls are not too complicated: four keys are used for movement and one to boost. Boosting needs fuel which can be bought or earned by performing combos, e.g. driving on the wrong side of the road. Multiple combos in short order also reward additional Mittron. Of course there is also a strong multiplayer component to the game. The most important modes are regular races in an arena (including betting opportunities, up to 16 players), group races (a group can consist of up to four players) and "Rush Time" where many players try to takeout one huge HUV (at least 10 participants).
