For Liberty! For Liberty! is a classic hex-based wargame. It is an enhanced remake of 1848 as it was released only a few months after that game and includes the Rakoczi Independence War of Hungary between 1703 and 1711 featured in that title (4 campaigns), as well an entire new scenario about the American Revolution of 1775-1783 (5 campaigns). It was even released on the American Independence Day, 4th July.

Players control the armies in turns and there are two main rule sets. In the simple one players do not need to change stances or select formations on the map. The advanced one brings along a large numbers of additional rules. While playing, all strategic information are shown on the left side of the screen, including resources, a list of the armies and soldiers, tactics and battle decisions, statistics and abilities.

Players exercise control by capturing towns that provide supplies and recruits to nearby, friendly armies. When encountering a town under enemy influence, it can be taken over. The same goes for forts, but there a siege needs to be initiated. Players can then decide to bombard it (destroying the walls with heavy artillery) or starve it until the soldiers surrender. Movement over the map is influenced by the type of terrain and weather conditions. It is also possible to dig trenches to hold a defensive position.

Each side has a morale level that is referred to as Zeal, and it is influenced by a large amount of parameters. During battles regiments with cavalry, cannons and infantry can take different stances. They are commanded by different leaders who can exercise their influence and have special abilities. In the American campaign it is possible to transport them by sea. Basic units are formed through attributes such as morale, experience, readiness, supply, strength, melee, firepower, defense, pay, range and base movement points. Not all soldiers are shown at all times, they are represented by small groups.

Multiplayer games are available as hot-seat sessions, network games (LAN and internet) or play-by-email. [source:mobygames]
