iRacing is one of those products which is more simulation than game - in this case of car races. All of the available cars and tracks are licensed and thoroughly replicated. At the time being players can purchase over 16 cars and over 38 tracks with different variations but more content is added over time. Yes, players have to purchase them - the membership (not free) includes only a small percentage of the content.

Because of its aspiration as simulation there are several restrictions compared to other racing games, e.g. there are no driving helps like automatic gears, just the cockpit perspective, no support for input devices other than a steering wheel with pedals and only rudimentary tuning options. The only way of playing are online races against other players but there is also a test mode to try out cars and tracks. To participate the player chooses a race or championship through the race calender on the official website - this is also the only way to start the game. Good results award more points and a better place on the ranking which opens up more advanced championships. [source:mobygames]
