Shaolin Mystery: Tale of the Jade Dragon Staff Yu is a member of the Yan rebellion in Ancient China, fighting against the Imperial forces to free the city of Xian from oppression. One day, as she was buying food supplies in the market, two Imperial guards seize a passerby. She recognizes the man as Zihao, her childhood friend. While being arrested, Zihao claims to be the true emperor and the rightful heir to the throne. Yu has to rescue her friend from prison and find the Jade Dragon Staff to reinstate him as the Chinese ruler.

Shaolin Mystery: Tale of the Jade Dragon Staff is a hidden object game with elements borrowed from standard point-and-click adventures, where the player has to collect a series of items and use them to solve all puzzles found on most locations. The majority of the objects are received after completing two variations of seek-and-find gameplay, and stored inside slots in the inventory at the bottom, from where they can be dragged and dropped on interactive portions of the scenery to complete a task or perform an action.

Most scenes have special hotspots over certain portions or features, opening a circle with a series of gray images surrounding the outer rim. After activating these rings, the player has to find all the displayed objects and drag and drop them from the scenery to the hotspot, to perform an action or receive a new inventory item.

Certain hidden object challenges take place on separate screens, where the objective is to find and click on all the items listed at the bottom, on places filled with assorted paraphernalia scattered around the scene. The hint button is a green gem set at the bottom-left corner, showing the position of one of the required objects when activated, but taking some time to recharge after use.

Mini-games take place inside interactive windows where pieces and mechanisms have to be manipulated directly to solve several puzzles, where the player has to use a limited amount of cheese to lure and guide a mouse through a labyrinth, move wooden blocks in the limited space of a box to create an exit path for a medallion and complete other similar challenges. They can be optionally skipped after a few minutes. [source:mobygames]
