Victorian Mysteries: Woman in White In 19th century England, a struggling artist takes a tutoring position to the daughters of Baron Fairlie, traveling to Limmeridge House, the family mansion, to meet his future employees. Arriving by train to Cumberland, he gets lost while trying to find the manor and ends up meeting a strange apparition on the road: a mysterious woman clad in a white gown inquiring about the Baron and his wife. After finally reaching the house and settling in, he starts to perform his functions while at the same time doing side investigations, asking the members of the family about the woman in white he previously met, and searching for more information about her on the mansion grounds.

Victorian Mysteries: Woman in White is a hidden object game with adventure elements based on the book by Wilkie Collins first published in 1860. It's the second electronic adaptation of the author's works created by the same team that developed Mystery Masterpiece: The Moonstone. This time, there's a greater emphasis on the adventure portions, where the player has to gather a series of inventory objects to solve all the puzzles found on most locations. As in traditional point-and-click adventures, the items have to be dragged and dropped from the inventory at the bottom to an interactive portion of the scenery to perform an action or complete a task.

Some of the necessary items are only received after completing one of the hidden object scenes, that can be accessed after clicking on the shimmering hotspots found on certain locations. They take place on a separate screen, where the objective is to find and click on all the items listed at the bottom, on places filled with scattered paraphernalia cluttering the scenery. The hint button is a mechanical owl at the bottom-right corner, that shows the position of one of the required objects when activated, but takes some time to recharge after use. Some locations have self-contained puzzles that appear inside a window, where a mechanism of some sort has to be manipulated directly to solve them. [source:mobygames]
