Ry? ga Gotoku Kenzan! is the third game in the Yakuza series, this time changing neon-lit Tokyo setting with a 400 years older one of an Edo period Kyoto, thus guns are replaced by swords.

The player takes a role of Miyamoto Musashi, a renowned swordsman who after the battle of Sekigahara came to Gion district of Kyoto and changed his identity to Kiryuu Kazumanosuke. Gion is a part of Kyoto where rich people indulge themselves in buying sexual favors. One day, a little girl named Haruka, comes to Kiryuu asking him to track down and kill Miyamoto Musashi, the man who murdered her parents.

Character models and names might seem as recurring from past two games (such as Kazuma and Haruka). SEGA got some of the well known japanese actors for voiceovers for this game, and not only that, but they used face scan technology to make game characters share visual similarities with actors. Matsuda Shouta ("Hana Yori Dango" and "Liar Game" series), Terajima Susumu ("Unfair" series), Masaya Kato ("Unfair" and "Anego" series), Naoto Takenaka ("Nodame Cantabile" series), would be just to name a few.
