Shades Of Doom is a unique first-person shooter game, that completely abandons a visual aspect of its presentation. With the idea of creating a game being accessible for visually impaired people in mind, the developers have crafted a game, that communicates to the player solely through the medium of sound. The gameplay, however, remains completely faithful to the FPS genre guidelines.

The game casts player in the role of a FDN (Federation of Democratic Nations) officer who is ordered to investigate a high security research facility. The communication with the base ceased 2 hours prior to player's arrival. His task is to investigate the matter and deal with whatever problem presents itself.

The player has to explore nine separate levels of the base. To aid his cause he will be equipped with a medical kit, a few grenades, a gun, a knife, fists, and a computer to analyze his surroundings. On his way into the heart of the base, the player will find additional equipment such as better weapons and armor.

To navigate through the levels player must rely on the various sounds. The echo of his footsteps will provide a vital clue as to the length of the passage ahead of him, and the sound of the wind will indicate an opening that may has appeared at player's sides. An approaching monster can be easily detected by his groaning, which gives away both the direction it is coming form and the distance. Player's portable computer EVA can optionally provide additional information as to his surroundings and status.

To suit every gamer proficiency level the game offers five various difficulty settings. Additionally players can enable a visual representation of the area pictured as a top-view map.

The game takes full advantage of the surround speaker system setup to convey the sound information in the most accurate way possible. However, it also features synthesized 3D effects for non-surround sound systems, that will grant every gamer the ability to properly determine the sources of game's sounds and successfully navigate the dark levels of Shades Of Doom.
