Ultimate Puzzles 500 is a jigsaw puzzle game. Players start by choosing an image and number of pieces in the puzzle from the main menu. The included images are classified under a variety of categories: Classic, Fireworks, Flora, Fractal, Landscape, Marine, Material, Microscope, Sunset, Things and Trees. Additionally the player can import images from their own file to use as puzzle pictures. Once these menu options are selected the playing field loads. The player has but a moment to see the puzzle whole before the image smashes apart into puzzle pieces. The player must then put it back together as fast as they can. There are no opponents except the clock and beating one's own "best time".

The player is also what "world" they are playing in for the puzzle field. These are: City, Colonial, Desert, Dungeon, Space and Warehouse. In the game's default 2D mode, this simply changes the texture that the puzzle is arranged on. However if the player switches to 3D mode, each "world" has a variety of 3D models and objects that can be seen around the puzzle field.
