Love Story: Letters from the Past Mary is an elderly woman who recently lost her second husband. After returning from the funeral, she finds a mysterious package waiting inside her mail box. The box contains several letters from her first husband, a soldier that went missing while fighting in Cambodia. Wind from an open window blows all the letters around the house, and Mary must collect all of them to finally discover what really happened to her first love.

Love Story: Letters from the Past is a hidden object game with adventure elements. Most of the time, the objective is to find and click on all the items listed at the right side of the screen, on locations filled with assorted objects scattered around the scenery. Some of the items are stored in the inventory, a stamp above the list with four slots, from where they can be dragged and dropped on logical portions of the scene to perform an action or complete a task. The hint button is a locket at the top-right corner that shows the position of one of the required items when selected, but takes some time to recharge after use.

The chapters alternate between present and past, where the player assumes the role of either Mary or her first husband John. Mary has to collect John's letters, by using the inventory tools to retrieve them from the nooks and crannies where they landed. John recounts his escape from the prisoner's camp, where he had to use the available items to continue his voyage home. There's a mini-game at the end of each section, with arcade and logic challenges that must be completed to finish the chapter. The games can be optionally skipped after a few minutes.
