AI Wars: The Awakening is set in the near future where every structure is linked to the NET which stores all information of the world. Artificial Intelligences, so-called "agents", do all necessary deeds in this cyberspace world. The player takes control over an agent who wants to achieve one of three possible goals: become immortal, achieve sentience or conquer the NET. Whatever goal he chooses, most time is spent by exploring the big levels, hacking into computers and collecting data.

Of course there are also forces who wants to stop him, namely viruses in the form of robots. To get rid of them the agent needs to be upgraded with offensive or defensive program updates, e.g. masquerading into a virus, an anti-virus update to repair damage or a weapon which paralyzes enemy robots while they try to calculate ?. Other updates help in the hacking process. All these upgrades cost money which is earned by selling sensitive corporate data gained by hacking into their systems. For all goals it is most important to collect as many data as possible to develop new technologies which are used to achieve the goal.
