Alganon is a fantasy-based MMORPG. The combat elements are familiar to anyone who has played other games in the MMORPG genre, but Alganon places the characters, world, and lore in a new fantasy world.

The Human empire of the Asharr, brave devotees to the gods of beauty, creation, and justice, fight against the Talrok empire of the Kujix, followers of the dark gods of Knowledge, War, and Change. The battles and conflicts between these two rival sets of deities plays out in the War of Conversion between the two Empires. The players of Alganon are heroes of the empire who must protect their people from the problems that arise due to the ceaseless warring of these rival gods.

Players can choose from four traditional fantasy archetypes for their character's story - armored fighters are called Soldiers. A magic-wielding wizard is known as a Magus. Healers are master of life (and death), and the iconic "lone wolf of the wilds" type is known as a Ranger.

However, these "story-based classes" are not limited to one or two gameplay mechanics. Soldiers can be more than just a "boss tank." They can also specialize to become a DPS class, or a support class, or a class that takes on many smaller enemies instead of one large one. Magi are more than just AoE damage. They can specialize in frost and become tanks, or specialize in fire and burn down a single target, or specialize in Storm and support the group. Rangers can heal, tank, or do ranged DPS. Healers not only throw out large bursts of healing, they can also choose to spread their healing across multiple targets, or be a support class that buffs their allies, or become a DPS class.

While Alganon's gameplay is similar to other games in the MMORPG genre, it is full of small changes that are aimed to create a friendly, mature community and not punish players who play the game casually.

For example, the study system allows players to advance even while offline, the dual role system makes it easy for players to find the party members they need, and there are alternate paths to the same rewards so that players can earn rewards by effort, but those who cannot afford that effort can spend time to earn a new way to achieve the same goal.

Alganon was originally a subscription based MMORPG with a monthly fee. The later introduced free-to-play concept finances itself with micro-transactions where players can buy items, boosts and services like creating a guild with real money. [source:mobygames]
