Cycling Champion takes the player riding a bike on several different tracks. The terrain influences the difficulty of the cycling controls, the interval at which the player alternately presses the buttons has to be increased when riding uphill. The player also has to avoid obstacles on the track, like puddles or other bikers.
At the start of the game, the player can choose between a single race and tournament mode. Tournament mode has all three tracks in a row, and the winner is decided by overall points after each race. The top of the screen shows the player's position in the race and the remaining time on the track. The bottom has a profile view of the track, showing if it's going up- or downhill and a water meter.
