North vs. South: The Great American Civil War is a turn-based strategy game that lets you play various battles in the American Civil War. The game features a top-down view of a hexagonal world map with varying heights, forests, rivers, and roads. Each turn you can command a certain number of your officers to perform an action. How many depends on the statistics of your general.

Units in the game are affected by morale, which decreases when under attack causing it to route. Generals can restore morale. Types of units include anything you could expect from a Civil War game such as infantry, cavalry and artillery. Units can be placed in various formations for strategic advantages.

The game features a lot of battles from the Eastern theater, including famous battles like Antitam and Gettysburg, but also many smaller little known battles. Besides playing single battles you can also play a campaign, that has you choose a side and fight battles for their cause. The next map is always dependant on how you do in the current. If you win or lose will result in a different map. [source:mobygames]
